~ないでください – Saying “Please Don’t Do” in Japanese [JLPT N5]
Share
Quick Summary
Meaning: ~ないでください means “please don’t do …”. It is a polite way to tell someone not to do an action.
How to Use: Attach it to the ない-form of a verb.
Example:
- そのパンダに**日本語**で話さないでください。
- Sono panda ni nihongo de hanasanaide kudasai.
- Please don’t speak Japanese to that panda.
Overview
~ないでください is used when you want to say “please don’t do something” in Japanese. It is a very common beginner grammar pattern, and you will see it on signs, hear it in stores, and use it in everyday conversation.
The basic feeling is a polite request not to do an action. For example, if someone is about to touch something dangerous, open a door, or feed a mysterious duck in sunglasses, you can use this pattern to ask them to stop or not do it.
It is softer than a direct command, because ください (kudasai, please) makes it sound polite. Still, it can sound firm depending on the situation. On a warning sign, it may feel quite strong. In normal conversation, it is usually just a polite way to ask someone not to do something.
You can think of it like this:
- Verb in ない-form + でください
- = Please don’t do that
This grammar point is used with verbs, not nouns or adjectives. So you use it for actions such as 食べる (taberu, to eat), 行く (iku, to go), or 寝る (neru, to sleep).
For beginners, this is one of the most useful negative request patterns to learn early, because it appears everywhere. You may see signs such as 入らないでください (hairanaide kudasai, please do not enter) or 写真を撮らないでください (shashin o toranaide kudasai, please do not take photos).
- 宇宙船に入らないでください。
- Uchuusen ni hairanaide kudasai.
- Please don’t enter the spaceship.
- わたしのプリンを食べないでください。
- Watashi no purin o tabenaide kudasai.
- Please don’t eat my pudding.
Structure / Formation
To make ~ないでください, first change the verb into its ない-form. Then add でください.
- V-ない + でください
Basic Formation
This is the main pattern you need:
| Verb | ない-form | With ~ないでください | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 食べる | 食べない | 食べないでください | Please don’t eat |
| 行く | 行かない | 行かないでください | Please don’t go |
| 話す | 話さない | 話さないでください | Please don’t speak |
| する | しない | しないでください | Please don’t do |
| 来る | 来ない | 来ないでください | Please don’t come |
How to Make the ない-form
Since ~ないでください uses V-ない, you need the negative plain form of the verb first.
For る-verbs, remove る and add ない:
- 食べる → 食べない
- 見る → 見ない
- 寝る → 寝ない
For う-verbs, change the final sound to the a-sound and add ない:
- 話す → 話さない
- 読む → 読まない
- 帰る → 帰らない
The two most important irregular verbs are:
- する → しない
- 来る → 来ない
How It Works in a Sentence
After making the ない-form, simply add でください. The whole expression comes at the end of the sentence.
- そのボタンを押さないでください。
- Sono botan o osanaide kudasai.
- Please don’t press that button.
- わたしのねこにサンドイッチをあげないでください。
- Watashi no neko ni sandoicchi o agenaide kudasai.
- Please don’t give my cat a sandwich.
In these sentences, the action you do not want someone to do is shown by the verb in V-ない.
Politeness and Nuance
~ないでください is polite and standard. It is a good choice for beginners because it works in many situations.
You can use it:
- when asking a friend politely not to do something
- when speaking to someone you do not know well
- on public signs and written notices
Even though it includes ください, the sentence can still feel strong if the situation is serious. For example, if something is dangerous, 触らないでください (sawaranai de kudasai, please do not touch) sounds like a clear warning, not a gentle suggestion.
Usage Tip
For this grammar point, the most important thing is to remember that it connects to V-ない, not to the dictionary form.
So:
- 食べないでください is correct.
- 食べるでください is not correct.
If you can make the ない-form, you can make ~ないでください.
Example Sentences
- このドラゴンににんじんをあげないでください。
- Kono doragon ni ninjin o agenaide kudasai.
- Please don’t give carrots to this dragon.

Answers and Explanations
- このはこを開けないでください。(Kono hako o akenaide kudasai.) — This is correct because ~ないでください attaches to the ない-form, and 開ける becomes 開けない.
- ここでべんきょうしないでください。(Koko de benkyou shinaide kudasai.) — This is correct because する changes to しない before adding でください.
- 写真を撮らないでください。(Shashin o toranaide kudasai.) — This is the natural sign-style sentence using the ない-form of 撮る, which is 撮らない.
- あした来ないでください。(Ashita konaide kudasai.) — This is correct because 来る is irregular and its ない-form is 来ない.
- わたしのケーキを食べないでください。(Watashi no keeki o tabenaide kudasai.) — This is correct because 食べる becomes 食べない, then you add でください.
- ドアをしめるないでください。(Doa o shimeru naide kudasai.) — This is the error because you cannot attach ないでください to the dictionary form; しめる should become しめない.
- はやく来るないでください。(Hayaku kuru naide kudasai.) — This is the error because 来る should change to 来ない, not 来るない.
- このいすにすわらないでください。(Kono isu ni suwaranaide kudasai.) — Use the ない-form of すわる, which is すわらない, plus でください.
- そのペンギンに話さないでください。(Sono pengin ni hanasanaide kudasai.) — 話す becomes 話さない, so this correctly means “Please don’t talk to that penguin.”
- きょうしつで寝ないでください。(Kyoushitsu de nenaide kudasai.) — 寝る is a る-verb, so it becomes 寝ない before adding でください.
