Japanese kanji 平, 和, and 泰 on a pale geometric background

Kanji for Peace in Japanese: 平, 和, and 平和

The standard Japanese word for "peace" is 平和 (へいわ, heiwa, peace).

If you want one character with a related meaning, (わ, wa, harmony) means harmony. (hei, calm or even) and (tai, peaceful or stable) can suggest calm or peace inside compound words, but neither is the usual standalone answer for "peace."

平和 (heiwa, peace) is the normal Japanese word for peace

平和 (へいわ, heiwa, peace) is the word to use for peace in ordinary modern Japanese. It can describe peace between countries, a peaceful society, or a calm situation without conflict.

  • 世界平和 (せかいへいわ, sekai heiwa, world peace)
  • 平和な国 (へいわなくに, heiwa na kuni, a peaceful country)
  • 平和を願う (へいわをねがう, heiwa o negau, to wish for peace)

If someone asks, "How do you write peace in Japanese?" 平和 (heiwa, peace) is the clearest complete answer.

(hei, calm), (wa, harmony), and (tai, stable): what they mean

Kanji Common reading Main idea How it appears
へい (hei) Flat, even, calm, fair 平和 (heiwa, peace) and 平穏 (heion, calm)
(wa) Harmony, accord, Japanese style (wa, harmony) can work as a one-character symbol
たい (tai) Peaceful, calm, stable 安泰 (antai, safe and stable) and 泰平 (taihei, peace and tranquility)

These characters are related, but they are not three interchangeable ways to write the English word "peace." Japanese usually expresses the full idea with a word, not a loose collection of symbols.

Useful words for peace, calm, and harmony

平穏 へいおん (heion) calm, tranquility
安泰 あんたい (antai) safe, secure, stable
泰平 たいへい (taihei) peace, tranquility
泰然 たいぜん (taizen) calm, composed
和解 わかい (wakai) reconciliation, settlement

Which form should you copy?

Use 平和 (heiwa, peace) when you want the normal Japanese word for peace.

Use (wa, harmony) when you specifically want the idea of harmony, accord, or a Japanese-style concept. It can work as a one-character symbol, but it is less exact than 平和 (heiwa, peace).

(hei, calm) and (tai, peaceful or stable) are meaningful characters, but they are not the best standalone choices for a reader who simply wants to copy "peace" in Japanese.

A note for artwork and tattoos

A single kanji can look neat, but shorter is not automatically clearer. If the intended meaning is peace, 平和 (heiwa, peace) is the safest direct word. If the intended meaning is harmony, (wa, harmony) may fit better.

Before using Japanese permanently in a tattoo, logo, or design, check the complete phrase and the context. This is considerably easier than explaining a confusing tattoo for the rest of your life.

For the other half of "peace and love," compare (ai, love) and (koi, romantic love).
